Rocket01: The Mural Space Between Nature and a Beautiful Future

The future, nature, beauty, and rockets are the subject today! Born in Sheffield, United Kingdom, and now based in Porto, Portugal, Chris Butcher -better known as Rocket01, has spent more than two decades developing a visual language that exists in the Universe of street art, environmental reflection, science fiction, beautiful creatures, and atmospheric storytelling.
Beginning in graffiti culture during the mid-1990s, his practice gradually evolved beyond lettering and traditional mural formats into immersive painted worlds that feel less like illustrations and more like environments.

His work plays with the idea of retrofuturism but does not imagine the future as cold, mechanical, or dystopian but always with the elements you see on his work.
Rocket01 proposes another possibility: a future where technology, healthy and happy humans still coexist with nature. One of the most recognizable qualities of his murals is the atmosphere he generates with his signature style.
Rather than depicting specific places or moments, Rocket01 creates suspended realities and spaces where organic forms, futuristic structures, distant landscapes, and subtle but fragile human presence coexist in quiet tension. By 'fragile' we mean that the humans on Chris' murals usually require an astronaut suit to enjoy the view.

Floating vegetation.
Layered atmospheres.
Soft transitions between sky, water, and architecture.
Figures that appear contemplative rather than heroic.
Every element contributes to creating places that feel both familiar and impossible.
His compositions are cinematic without becoming literal, there is always enough ambiguity left for the viewer to complete the narrative of each scene. That openness is part of what gives the work its emotional depth.

Technically, Rocket01 occupies a unique position within contemporary muralism. While spray paint is often associated with immediacy and raw gesture, his surfaces reveal remarkable control and precision.
Years of experimentation have allowed him to develop an approach capable of producing incredibly soft gradients, delicate transitions, and highly detailed textures using aerosol as a primary medium.
The result is an unusual balance between scale and intimacy. His murals feel expansive yet carefully crafted, complex, yet calm.
You can still sense the energy of graffiti beneath the surface, transformed into a more atmospheric and contemplative language.

Science fiction is another recurring influence throughout his work, but not in its traditional form.
Rocket01 is less interested in spectacle than in possibility.
His murals explore broader questions:
How can urban environments reconnect with nature?
What happens when technology becomes integrated rather than dominant?
What does an optimistic future look like?
Environmental consciousness quietly appears throughout his body of work, often through imagery of growth, coexistence, and adaptation.
There is optimism in these worlds.
There's seems to be a belief that imagination remains a tool for creating better environments.

Over the years, Rocket01 has created murals and exhibited internationally, building a body of work that continues to expand across public space while maintaining a deeply personal visual identity.
Rocket01 occupies a compelling space within contemporary muralism bringing together the energy of street culture, the imagination of speculative futures, and a deep sensitivity toward the natural world.
